Having a baby can be an exciting, but overwhelming experience. Gundersen Health System offers several classes and resources to help you from the start of your pregnancy to after the baby is born.
You may register for classes at any time to reserve a spot in the class but should not attend until after 28 weeks. Individual circumstances will vary.
Here are some of the classes and resources available. To the right, you will find upcoming classes and events. If you are unable to get into a class please call the Perinatal Office at 608-775-6878.
- Managing your Labor - No Charge
This class at no charge is intended to give you an abbreviated version of childbirth. The class will include:
- The labor process
- Pain management (from no medications to epidural)
- When to come to the hospital
- What to expect when you arrive
If you sign up for this class, attending the Managing Your Labor Part 2 class may not be necessary. However, a Comfort Care class may be beneficial. If after attending this class you feel you would like additional or more in-depth information to meet your specific needs, please feel free to sign up for other classes offered.
- Managing Your Labor Part 2 - $20
In this three hour class, you and your support person will expand upon the knowledge you obtained from the Managing Your Labor class. It is not required to take a Managing Your Labor class before Managing Your Labor Part 2, but it is highly recommended. If you have participated in a childbirth class before and are having another baby, this class could serve as a good refresher course. This class gives you and your support person additional practice and learning time to become comfortable with important labor coping techniques such as:
- Breathing techniques
- Counter pressure
- Visualization/guided imagery
- Position changes
- Rhythm and ritual
Please wear comfortable clothes, bring two pillows, and be prepared to move. It is recommended that a support person accompany to be there for stability of movement and hands-on learning.
- Individualized / Private Childbirth Education - $75
- Basics Of Baby Care - $20
This class is designed for expectant parents and is devoted to the care of your newborn. Presented by experienced registered nurses from Gundersen Health System, this class will discuss:
- Normal newborn characteristics
- Typical newborn behavior
- When to call your healthcare provider if you think your baby is ill
- Feeding and comforting
- Baby safety topics
- Car seat safety (official car seat testing will not be done)
- Essentials of Breastfeeding - $25
Our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants will discuss the benefits of breastfeeding and guide you through the basic of breastfeeding including:
- How breast feeding works
- Positioning and attachment
- When to feed your baby
- Breast care
If you are considering breastfeeding, this class will be very informative in helping you to make that decision.
This course also includes the online access which you would have available for 6 months.
Partners are encouraged to attend. Feel free to bring your own snacks. Please arrive 10 minutes early due to parking.
An online course is also offered in which you must purchase a book for $10. When purchasing the book, there will be detailed instructions included for accessing the online course. Throughout the online course, video clips and instructions are available. This access is available for 6 months so information can be reviewed after your baby is born. Note: Books are available for purchase at the boutique in the Onalaska Clinic-Center for Women on the 4th floor.
- Through A Child's Eyes - $15 per family
This class is designed to prepare your child(ren) to welcome a new baby into the family. This class focuses on your child's feelings on the upcoming arrival of their new sibling. Topics discussed include:
- What a baby does
- Why does a baby take some much of mom and dad's time
- Why we have to be gentle with a baby
- Video on being a big brother and big sister
This class is recommended for ages 3-8 years old. If your child plans on attending the birth, please call (608)775-6878 to set up a private 1-on-1 session with the instructor.
Note: Each child must be registered along with paying the fee of $15 per family.
- Back to Work: Breastfeeding - No Charge
You CAN return to work and still breastfeed!
This course will cover how to do this successfully. Designed to be taken several weeks prior to returning to work, this course will help you to plan and maintain a breastfeeding relationship with your baby. Topics include:
- Setting Goals
- The principles of demand and supply
- Pumping issues
- Starting pumping and bottles
- Working with your child care provider
- Common hurdles in the first few months
Babies are welcome to attend!
- Waterbirth - No Charge
In discussion with your provider it will be determined whether you are able to have a water birth prior to attending class.
This class is highly recommended if you are even considering water birth and will help you decide whether water birth is the right choice for you.
Begin the journey of learning about the most up to date form of gentle delivery, which honors the spiritual and emotional aspects of birth and incorporates the use of water in childbirth. Topics discussed include:
- How does Water Birth benefit me?
- Information on the relaxation that involves water birth
- Is Water Birth right for me?
