When a child has developmental problems, a birth defect or an illness, there is often a question of whether there might be a genetic component that has been passed through family. A specially trained genetics team at Gundersen Health System helps families screen for and manage genetic disorders.
Gundersen's genetics team includes a geneticist and genetic counselor. A child may be referred to this team for different reasons including:
- Birth defects
- Developmental delays
- If a genetic disorder has been identified in the family
- Down Syndrome
The pediatric genetics department will work with the family to determine the genetic cause. They will examine the child and review the family medical history. If needed, they will order further testing including blood tests, x-rays and other lab work.
The genetic counselors will help the family coordinate care. They provide education to manage the disorder, and coordinate further tests that may be needed as the child ages. They may also evaluate other family members and provide information on how it could affect them.
The pediatric genetics department works closely with the child's primary care provider and other departments to provide the best overall care. For more information about the pediatric genetic services offered at Gundersen, call (608) 775-6766 or (800) 362-9567 Ext. 56766.
