Gundersen PdC surgeons earn designations

Gundersen Prairie du Chien Clinic surgeons Carrie Kramer, MD, FACS; and Tamara Holzer, DO, FACOS, have earned fellowship designations from their respective colleges of surgeons.

Dr. Kramer was among 1,827 Initiates from around the world who became Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) recently during the Convocation ceremony at the College's 2017 annual Clinical Congress in San Diego, Calif. This year's class of Initiates was among one of the largest ever admitted into the College.

Dr. Kramer received a medical doctorate in 2006 from The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wis., and graduated from her general surgery residency in 2011 from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Mich. In 2012, Dr. Kramer attained board certification from the American Board of Surgery. She has a strong professional interest in a wide variety of general surgery procedures. This includes but is not limited to upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, skin lesions, colon and anal surgeries, hernias, gallbladder, appendix, breast and C-sections.

By meeting the College's stringent membership requirements, Fellows of the College have earned the distinguished right to use the designation of "FACS" (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after their names. An applicant for Fellowship must be a graduate of an approved medical school; must have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the College; must possess certification by an American surgical specialty board or appropriate certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; and must have been in practice for at least one year at the time of his or her application. Before admission into Fellowship, the surgeon must further demonstrate ethical fitness and professional proficiency, and his or her acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of its Board of Regents.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. The College is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery.

Dr. Holzer was among 68 initiates who became Fellows of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (FACOS) during a ceremony at the College's 2017 Annual Clinical Assembly in Washington, D.C. This year's class was one of the largest ever admitted into the College.

Dr. Holzer received a medical doctorate in 2005 from Des Moines University. In 2013, she attained board certification from the American Board of Osteopathic Surgery. Dr. Holzer has a strong professional interest in Robotic and laparoscopic surgery, as well as breast surgery hernia repair, gallbladder removal and both upper and lower endoscopy. She holds membership in other professional societies including American Association of Physician Leaders, AOA, ACOS and WSS.
