Gundersen to open Flu Shot Clinics on Oct. 17
Gundersen Health System will open their Flu Shot Clinics in La Crosse and Onalaska on Monday, Oct. 17.
The Flu Shot Clinics will be held on Gundersen's La Crosse campus on the third floor of the clinic and in the lower level of the Gundersen Onalaska Clinic. Both sites will be open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 23. No appointments are needed.
Flu shots are also available for anyone 2 years old and older at Express Care clinics which are located in the Village Shopping Center and in Crossing Meadows Shopping Center in Onalaska. Gundersen's clinics throughout the area are also offering the flu vaccine.
Patients can already receive their flu shots at their regularly scheduled appointments, and hospitalized patients are offered vaccination against influenza prior to discharge.
All other area Gundersen medical clinics will offer flu shots for all ages by appointment during regular business hours.
It is especially important for people who are considered at high risk for problems with the flu to be vaccinated including:
- Children between 6 and 23 months of age
- Those age 65 and over
- Pregnant women in their second and third trimester
- People with health conditions such as heart or lung problems, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, asthma, etc.
- Residents of long-term care facilities
- Healthcare workers
The nasal influenza spray was considered to be more effective in children in the past but the Center for Disease Control determined that the recent formulation was found to be ineffective. Due to the ineffectiveness of the nasal influenza vaccination, Gundersen is not offering it to patients this year. Gundersen will offer the nasal influenza spray to patients again in the future when it is found to be effective.
