You can't control all of the external stressors that happen in life, but you can learn how to gain some internal control of your responses to them. Biofeedback is a non-invasive technique that can help you learn how to make changes in your body to reduce stress, control pain and improve your health.
The goal of biofeedback is self-awareness and self-regulation of bodily responses. It can be used to control:
- Migraine and tension headaches
- high blood pressure
- panic attacks
- Stress-related disorders
- Chronic pain
- Sleep disorders
- Raynaud's disease
- and more...
With biofeedback, you may be able to reduce or eliminate the need for some medications. Biofeedback can also be used to complement other therapies.
How it works
Biofeedback uses a computerized system where sensors are placed on the skin. These sensors monitor and measure the body's responses such as breathing, heart rate, muscle tension and skin temperature. The sensors provide immediate and continuous visual and/or auditory feedback.
Through feedback, you learn to make changes that initially may be imperceptible, but over time and with practice you become more aware of the changes you are making. You also develop awareness of how your thoughts, emotions and body responses are related and how to control them to bring about the desired change. By practicing this in biofeedback sessions and at home, you learn how to incorporate these changes into your life without the biofeedback equipment.
