Gundersen Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, works with a team of specialists to reduce pain and improve the quality of life without surgery.
PM&R treats patients in the hospital (inpatient) and clinic (outpatient).
Inpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Our accredited Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit offers a comprehensive rehabilitation program for adolescents to adults who have sustained a:
- Spinal cord injury
- Traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury
- Neurological condition
- Major multiple trauma or any other debilitating condition impairing a safe return to a community setting.
The patient must be medically stable, require continuous monitoring by a physician, need 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care, and other criteria to be admitted into the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.

PM&R also offers the Adult Neurodevelopment Clinic and the Adult Down Syndrome Clinic. Both are two day clinics where the patient is seen by healthcare professionals from multiple areas. After the visit, the healthcare team discusses the findings and then meets with the patient and/or caregiver to discuss recommendations and follow-up care.
