Neurointerventional Services

Neurointerventional services focus on diagnosing and treating conditions that occur within the blood vessels of the brain or spine. Neurointerventional procedures involve inserting tiny, flexible tubes called catheters into blood vessels in the groin area and up into the blood vessels leading to the brain. This allows the doctor to treat blood vessel disorders that can affect the nervous system, such as stroke.

Neurointerventional procedures are minimally invasive which means they can be done through smaller incisions and in general provide for:

  • Less pain post-procedure
  • Brief hospital stay
  • Smaller scars
  • Quicker return to your regular daily activities

A neurointerventionalist may treat:

  • Acute stroke
  • Ruptured brain aneurysms and unruptured brain aneurysms
  • Intracranial stenosis (narrowing of the blood vessels within the brain)
  • Carotid artery stenosis (narrowing of vessels supplying the brain)
  • Blood vessel malformation within the brain called cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM)

Procedures that a Neurointerventional team may perform include:

  • Intra-arterial (lA) thrombolysis for stroke patients
  • Mechanical clot extraction
  • Carotid & vertebral artery stenting/angioplasty
  • Angioplasty and stenting for blockages in vessels leading to the brain, including the carotid, vertebral and intracranial arteries
  • Aneurysm coiling
  • Epistaxis embolization for chronic, severe nose bleeds
  • Inferior petrosal sinus sampling for Cushing's disease
  • Dural sinus thrombolysis/thrombectomy, angioplasty/stenting
  • Pre-surgical WADA testing for epilepsy patients to establish language and memory centers of the brain
  • Embolization for blood vessel deformities such as dural arteriovenous fistulae
  • Tumor embolization
  • Spinal vascular malformations

Not all conditions are treated with a procedure. A comprehensive team approach is used to assess patients and determine the care that is most appropriate for them.
