Gundersen Lutheran’s Memory Center uses a team approach to provide the best care for patients dealing with memory issues. Staff includes a neurologist who is a specialist in diseases of the nervous system; a neuropsychologist who specializes in determining which capabilities are intact or impaired; a psychometrist who specializes in testing; a social worker; and a patient care coordinator.
Prior to the first appointment, patients and their families complete forms describing medical history, memory problems and family issues. From these, the neurologist can determine which laboratory tests, imaging studies and consultations are needed. A day-long session is then scheduled, and a family member is asked to accompany the patient. They can provide other information and observations as needed by clinic staff.
On evaluation day, a psychometrist administers tests of intelligence, memory, visual motor skills and higher reasoning abilities. While the patient is tested, other family members are interviewed by a social worker.

The neuropsychologist then interviews the patient and family in preparation for interpreting test results. The neurologist will meet with the family and patient, take a medical history, examine the patient, and order lab work and brain studies, such as computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or an electroencephalogram (EEG).
Usually one week later, the Memory Center staff meets with the patient and family to talk about test results, clinical findings and recommendations.
