Headache can be a serious illness that causes individuals to miss out on family activities and may cause lost days from work. Many people assume nothing can be done to decrease the severity or frequency of headaches, but the Gundersen Headache Clinic has experts who treat all types of headaches in adults and children.
There are many different types of headache. One of the more common is migraine headaches. It is most common in women, affecting 18 percent of all women and six percent of men.
Other types of non-migraine headaches are:
- Tension - More global with aching or a sense of pressure affecting the temples, front of head or head overall. Commonly brought on by stress, fatigue or hunger and usually lasts a few hours, but may continue for days.
- Cluster headaches - More likely among men. Sudden, severe, short-lived pain attacks on one side of the head which may repeat over several days or weeks.
Most headaches can be treated by your primary care provider. If the headaches don't improve, your provider may want you to be seen in the Headache Clinic. During the first appointment in the Headache Clinic, you will find out what type of headache you suffer from and what type of treatment is available.
Often, lifestyle changes can significantly improve headache. Medications may be needed to prevent the headaches. There are also medications available that could stop migraine.
