Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

An intra-aortic balloon pump is a support device which is inserted in the groin and advanced into the aorta. The purpose is to reduce the workload on the heart.

This may be used to allow the heart to rest and recover after a heart attack or prior to and during open heart surgery.
