Surgery close to home

What do breast surgery, cholecystectomy (the removal of the gallbladder), colonoscopy and C-sections have in common? They are all surgical procedures performed by Gundersen Health System surgeons in Prairie du Chien.

More surgery close to home

Patients in the Viroqua and Hillsboro area also have access to surgery close to home. Gundersen surgeons Rachel Wilson, MD, PhD; and Alexander Wade, MD, provide a variety of procedures at Gundersen Viroqua Clinic, Vernon Memorial Hospital and Gundersen St. Joseph's Hospital and Clinics in Hillsboro.

"Many people in the Prairie du Chien area don't realize the variety and complexity of surgeries we can perform in Prairie du Chien," explains Jennifer McLellan, MD, general surgeon at Gundersen Prairie du Chien.

Dr. McLellan, along with fellow Gundersen Prairie du Chien surgeons Tamara Holzer, DO; and Carrie Kramer, MD; offer a wide variety of surgeries at Gundersen Prairie du Chien Clinic and Crossing Rivers Health. Some of the procedures they perform are available using a minimally invasive technique, which means smaller incisions and scars, usually less pain after surgery and a faster recovery.

The Gundersen Prairie du Chien surgery team also offers appendectomy, hernia repair, colon cancer surgery, skin cancer removal, acid reflux surgery, vasectomies, plus many more. In addition to Prairie du Chien, the surgery team also performs surgery at Gundersen Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinics Boscobel and Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg, Iowa.

With three local surgeons, patients have access to surgical procedures 24 hours a day if an emergency should arise and can schedule surgeries for any weekday.

"Anytime a patient can have their procedure close to home, it is a benefit to them," says Dr. McLellan.
