What to know before your next blood draw

Like many Americans, you may take herbal remedies, supplements or vitamins in an effort to stay healthy.

But did you know dietary supplements can interfere with laboratory tests?

Supplements known to cause inaccurate results at Gundersen Health System Laboratories include biotin (vitamin B7) and turmeric.

Gundersen recommends stopping any over-the-counter vitamins, supplements or herbal remedies for at least 48 hours prior to a blood draw.

You may continue to take medications approved by your healthcare provider.

Always tell your primary care provider about any over-the-counter medications or supplements you are taking, and discuss any concerns you have.
