6 fun family fitness activities for summer

Kids need at least an hour of physical activity each day. Here are 6 ways to get your family moving this summer.

Physical activity is as important for kids as it is for adults. The number of kids between 2 and 19 years old who are overweight or obese has steadily increased since 1999, according to a recent study at Duke University. In 2014, 33.4% of children were overweight, up from 28.8% in 1999. Health experts recommend that kids get at least an hour of exercise or activity daily to prevent childhood obesity and to keep their bodies healthy and strong.

Here are a few fun activities that the entire family can enjoy together this summer.

  1. Splish, Splash - Kids and water go together naturally. Find indoor and outdoor pools so you can enjoy the water in any weather. Even leisurely swimming gets the heart pumping. If there's no pool around, a sprinkler or hose can keep everyone moving – and laughing.
  2. Dance Up a Storm - Put on your favorite music and move! Nothing says "fun" like a family dance party. This is a great indoor activity on rainy days and can keep kids of all ages entertained for hours.
  3. Grab Your Bikes - Bike riding is a great physical activity for kids and parents, too. Ride around the neighborhood, hit a local trail or join a family-friendly bike event. Just be sure that everyone is wearing their helmets.
  4. Tag, You're It! - This timeless childhood game has been played for hundreds of years. The rules are simple and it's a fun way to get the heart pumping.
  5. Paddle Away - If your family loves the outdoors, paddling a canoe or kayak can be great fun. Start with a certified guide in a tame river or lake and work your way up to greater adventure. This activity is best for families with older children.
  6. Hit the Trails - Check nearby parks for hiking trails. Start with easy trails if you have young children or are new to hiking. Your kids might enjoy taking along binoculars or a magnifying glass to get really close to nature. If you're going to be out for awhile, bring along some water and healthy snacks for the whole family to enjoy.
