valentine's day

Here's a new idea for Valentine's Day

These gifts show how much you care more than a box of chocolate.

Valentine's Day is a holiday dedicated to celebrating love. This year, why not skip the heart-shaped trinkets and instead indulge your sweetheart with the gift of a healthier heart? Doing so will show your love better than flowers or a box of candy.

Here are 5 heart-healthy ways to celebrate Valentine's Day:

  1. Be sweet to your sweetheart. Skip the box of decadent chocolates filled with sugar, fat and calories, and instead find a more meaningful – and healthy – gift. Write a poem, frame a favorite photo of the two of you or choose something special you know your sweetheart would surely love.
  2. Celebrate with a favorite activity. Rather than focusing just on an indulgent meal, make plans to spend time together enjoying a favorite activity. Go ice skating, take a walk through town or challenge each other to a few games of bowling. Just have some fun, laugh and savor your time together.
  3. Share a romantic dinner. If you're trying to follow a healthy eating plan, consider making a romantic dinner at home instead of heading to a restaurant. You'll be better able to control what you eat. If you prefer to go out, share an entrée or order appetizers so you don't overdo it.
  4. Keep things low-key. Enjoying a relaxing day with your loved one is a great way to unwind and reduce stress. Don't get caught up in the commercial demands of the holiday and instead focus on spending some quiet time together. Get massages, listen to music or even take a nap.
  5. Tell your loved one how much they mean to you. Talk about ways you can support each other to live healthier so you'll be together for a long time to come. Set up a standing date to take a walk each night, redo some of your favorite recipes so they're healthier or make plans to lose weight or stop smoking.
