Giving Tuesday

Honor someone special on #GivingTuesday

November 28

We all know about Black Friday—the biggest shopping day of the year. #GivingTuesday is the Tuesday following Black Friday. Instead of a day for shopping, it's a day when the world comes together to give.

On #GivingTuesday (or before), be part of something BIG! Join your friends, coworkers, neighbors and the La Crosse community in donating to Gundersen Medical Foundation. This is a special way to honor someone you admire and are grateful for--whether it be a coworker, medical staff, a friend or a family member who brightens your day.

Your gift will serve as a meaningful tribute to someone special in your life, while helping to advance medical education, research and community health. Without specifying your gift amount, the Foundation will send an acknowledgement note that includes your personal message to each honoree or group* you choose to recognize.

Gundersen employees can also make a gift using payroll deduction.

*For large groups, including departments, one note will be sent to the department manager.

Denise and Mark Nicholson, 'It just makes sense for us'

Everybody has them. Moments in life that changes your priorities and perspective on life. Denise and Mark sure have.

Six years ago, Mark was diagnosed with Pompe disease, a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder. "We were in the right place at the right time and Mark was diagnosed early. For some people it takes years for the right diagnosis," says Denise about what she calls a "Godwink."

It was an unexpected twist of fate that Gundersen has a neuromuscular specialist, Michael Leone, MD, who was familiar with this rare disorder. While there's no cure for this disease, Dr. Leone knew of a treatment that helps slow the progression. The disease is slowly robbing Mark of his mobility, but treatment has kept him out of a wheelchair for six years and has given Mark the best possible quality of life.

The Nicholsons donated to Gundersen Medical Foundation's campaign for the new hospital. "It was an opportunity for us to give back because we are so grateful for the care we receive. It was a no brainer," says Denise.

They also donate to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals® because they know the impact of their contribution. That's because, years ago, their daughter was born prematurely in Madison.

"At the time we lived 30 miles away and had a 2-year-old at home," Denise remembers. "It was so hard to get there often and to stay with her."

And years later, when their 1-year-old grandson fell and sustained a skull fracture (he's now a healthy 13-year-old), he was treated at Gundersen. There was a place for his mom to stay with him and she was given meal vouchers.

"We see how CMN Hospitals help families today in similar situations. Gas and meal vouchers make it easier for families to be with their hospitalized children. You don't have to give a lot, to give a lot," remarks Denise. "We are able to give back and our gift stays local. It just makes sense for us."

If, like Mark and Denise, you are grateful to have access to quality care at Gundersen, please consider making a donation to the Foundation during #GivingTuesday.
