Boys and Girls Club Mathy Center Family Night
Background: Global Partners has been working over the past 18 months to build new partnerships to improve the health of our neighborhood by inspiring volunteerism. Currently, 56 individuals are mentoring students and 11 GHS departments are sponsoring classrooms at Hamilton school to support the health of and foster resiliency among students and teachers! In 2017, Global Partners and GHS departments provided more than $6,000 of financial support, $8,600 of in-kind gifts, and 1500 mentoring hours at Hamilton.
New Opportunity with the Boys and Girls Club: The Global Partners-Hamilton steering team has decided to pilot a new opportunity that will specifically invest in the families in our neighborhood. The Boys and Girls Club (BGC) holds "family nights" at the Mathy Center (811 8th St. S. in La Crosse) with 80-100+ individuals attending, during which families eat a meal and participate in fun activities together. Many of these families have children who attend Hamilton and are being mentored by Global Partners volunteers. We want to help these family-centered events continue, since their funding ran out in December 2017.
The Plan: Global Partners has committed to fund and "staff" (with volunteers) one family night per month (usually the last Thursday of the month) from January-December 2018, with the possibility of continuing this next year. Each night, volunteers serve food, join parents and kids at tables to converse while eating, lead crafts and hang out in the gym. Occasionally we also set up a table in the lobby of the Mathy Center with information on a health topic, such as bike safety, skin care, or nutrition. In the summer, the June & July Family Nights will take place at Pogue Park vs indoors at the Mathy Center.
We Need Your Help! We are looking for individuals or departments willing to volunteer and/or donate funds to support a Family Night.
- Volunteers need to be available from 5:15-7:30 p.m. the night of the event. They can indicate a preference on where to help (serve food, visit with families, lead a craft activity, provide health education, play in gym) or be available to float where needed.
- Financial gifts support the cost of providing a meal to the families who attend, which is approximately $500 per night. Financial gifts are tax-deductible and can be designated to the Global Partners-Hamilton School Fund in the Gundersen Medical Foundation via our online giving site or set up through an automatic payroll deduction (e.g. $5 per pay period).
