Pediatric cardiology services now in Tomah
Susan MacLellan-Tobert, MD
At Gundersen Health System, we've combined state-of-the-art technology with expertise of our child-friendly Pediatric Cardiology specialists to diagnose, treat and monitor heart problems in children. This includes congenital and acquired heart disease from pregnancy through adulthood.
"Our Pediatric Cardiology team will work closely with you as the child's pediatrician or family practice provider to deliver the best heart care," reports Gundersen pediatric cardiologist Susan MacLellan-Tobert, MD. "We also work closely with other Gundersen specialists as needed, as well as colleagues in Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Rochester and Iowa City for any necessary pediatric heart surgery. Generally, children can receive all follow-up and long-term heart care at Gundersen in La Crosse and with you."
Gundersen Pediatric Cardiology specialists now also provide outreach services at the Gundersen Tomah Clinic.
"You should consider a referral appointment for any of your pediatric patients with congenital heart disease, even if it's been successfully treated. These patients should be monitored because they are at greater risk for cardiovascular problems in adulthood and our goal is to catch problems early," Dr. MacLellan-Tobert explains.
"We also encourage you to make a referral for any patient with symptoms that suggest potential heart problems," she adds. This includes:
- Chest pains
- Palpitations, murmurs or other irregular heart rhythm
- Family history of cardiac concerns
- Other abnormal test results
- Infections that may affect the heart
Gundersen also offers diagnostic testing for cardiac conditions in La Crosse, including:
- Fetal and pediatric echocardiography (see peds echo story below)
- Stress/exercise and tilt-table testing
- Heart rhythm monitoring
