New Specialty Pharmacy Service helps patients manage chronic health conditions
Effective Jan. 1, 2017, commercial members of Gundersen Health Plan must obtain specialty pharmaceuticals from a limited network of pharmacies. Gundersen Health Plan is working with Gundersen Health System Pharmacy (877) 208-1096 and UW Health Pharmacy (866) 894-3784 to provide management and dispensing of specialty medications via mail or locally at a participating pharmacy.
Gundersen Health System began offering Specialty Pharmacy Service on Jan. 1, through its three Gundersen Pharmacy locations in La Crosse and Onalaska. The service provides high-quality clinical monitoring to Gundersen Health Plan commercial members using certain classes of specialty medications.
Specialty medications are a group of high-cost medications that are typically used to treat chronic health problems. These injected or oral therapies tend to be more complicated and more costly. They may require special storage, regular lab testing and screening tests. Adherence to the regimen is needed to get the most benefit from these therapies.
The Specialty Pharmacy Service goal is to help patients stay healthy and keep coverage of these medicines affordable. A Gundersen pharmacist is available 24/7 to help with prior authorizations and financial assistance programs for patients who are prescribed specialty medications.
A Gundersen pharmacist will also regularly follow-up with patients to:
- Provide education about the specialty medication, device training and managing side effects
- Coordinate on-time refills of the specialty medication and supplies
- Monitor adherence, side effects and efficacy of certain classes of specialty medications
- Answer questions about the specialty medication or condition
Patients have the option to fill their specialty medication at one of three Gundersen Clinic Pharmacy locations:
- Gundersen La Crosse Pharmacy, 1836 South Avenue, La Crosse, WI 54601
- Gundersen East Pharmacy, 724 Denton Street, La Crosse, WI 54601
- Gundersen Onalaska Pharmacy, 3111 Gundersen Drive, Onalaska, WI 54650
Medications can be delivered (available in La Crosse) or shipped for free.
Gundersen Health Plan sent letters to providers who have prescribed specialty medications and patients who use them in the last five months, instructing them of this change and what actions they should take. Patients were also advised to begin transitioning to a pharmacy participating in the Specialty Pharmacy Service prior to Jan. 1.
