ROUTINE: AP or PA Upper and lower ribs & 25-30° Obliques of upper and lower ribs.

IMAGING PLATE: 14x17 CR cassettes-be sure to overlap

CENTRAL RAY:

  • Upper Ribs: Perpendicular to the cassette centered on T-7 (3-4” below jugular notch). Center the side affected on film.
  • Lower Ribs: Perpendicular to the cassette centered to midway b/w xyphoid and lower rib cage. Center the side affected on film.

HELPFUL POSITIONING:

  • Posterior Upper Ribs: Patient is AP. AP and Oblique Upper ribs done on inspiration. Include the first rib. Either RPO or LPO depending on affected side.
  • Posterior Lower Ribs: Patient is AP. AP and Oblique Lower ribs done on expiration. Include the 12th rib. Either RPO or LPO depending on affected side.
  • Anterior Upper Ribs: Patient is PA. AP and Oblique Upper Ribs done on inspiration. Include the first rib. Either RAO or LAO depending on affected side. Left ribs, RAO; Right ribs, LAO.
  • Anterior Lower Ribs: Patient is PA. AP and Oblique Lower Ribs done on expiration. Left ribs, RAO; Right ribs, LAO.
