Abdominal Aortic

SUBJECT: Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound Exam
SECTION: Radiology Ultrasound
ORIGINATOR: Deborah L. Richert, BSVT, RDMS, RVT
REVIEW DATE: July 26, 2014

Scheduling: One every half hour. Patient should be scheduled in the a.m. due to NPO status.

Prep: NPO > 10 hours.

Equipment: Ultrasound unit with a 3.5 MHz transducer. It may be necessary to have a unit with 2.5 or 5.0 MHz transducers.

Exam Protocol: With ultrasound the abdominal aorta is imaged in long axis and transverse views. The aorta should be evaluated from the diaphragm to the bifurcation. Any aneurysmal dilatation of the aorta is measured in AP and transverse diameters. The common iliac arteries are also evaluated with an attempt to image as much of the vessel as possible. The soft tissue surrounding the aorta should be evaluated for any abnormalities. If an aneurysm is seen an attempt should be made to evaluate the relationship of the aneurysm to the renal arteries.

Imaging Protocol: Even though only specific images are documented, the aorta and surrounding soft tissue will be scanned in detail. The following images will represent the abdominal aortic ultrasound exam (additional images may be needed for proper documentation):

  • Longitudinal proximal aorta with measurement in AP diameter
  • Transverse proximal aorta with measurements in transverse and AP diameters
  • Longitudinal mid aorta with measurement in AP diameter
  • Transverse mid aorta with measurements in transverse and AP diameters
  • Longitudinal distal aorta with measurement in AP diameter
  • Transverse distal aorta with measurements in transverse and AP diameters
  • Longitudinal RT common iliac artery with measurement in AP diameter
  • Transverse RT common iliac artery with measurements in transverse and AP diameters
  • Longitudinal LT common iliac artery with measurement in AP diameter
  • Transverse LT common iliac artery with measurement in transverse and AP diameters
