Periodontics - Gum Disease

Periodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. Periodontal disease is the gradual destruction of the gums (the soft tissue surrounding the teeth and the underlying tissue and bone). The most common cause of gum disease is improper brushing and flossing. If left untreated, gum disease can mean the eventual loss of teeth at a relatively young age.

The First Appointment

At the first appointment, a thorough examination of your mouth will be done. This will include a detailed examination of your teeth, gums, throat and tongue, as well as an external exam covering the lymph nodes of the neck. A complete set of X-rays will be taken and measurements of the spaces between the teeth and gums will be recorded. The information will be carefully evaluated so that we can accurately assess your periodontal needs.

After the exam is complete, you will be given specific details about normal and abnormal periodontal features by means of visual aids. The X-ray findings and pocket measurements will be explained to you in detail and then a treatment plan will begin. It will be discussed with you and your personal dentist. Immediate needs, as well as long-term objectives, will be outlined during this consultation. Our recommendations will be based on the goal of you getting the most longevity from your natural teeth.
