Nurse Residency Program

All registered nurses hired at Gundersen Health System with less than 12 months of acute/inpatient care experience are eligible to take part in the Nurse Residency Program.

This year-long program provides tools and opportunities to assist with the transition from new nurse to proficient nurse while promoting leadership development, expanding practice skills and preparing nurses to respond to future healthcare demands.

Program highlights

  • Connects "book knowledge" to real-life clinical challenges and decision-making
  • Embraces caring at the patient side (Caring Science Theory) while providing clinical resources and practices guidelines
  • Provides ongoing support from leadership and peers
  • Broadens understanding of healthcare delivery and inter-professional collaboration
  • Encourages professional growth and development by inter-weaving Gundersen’s Nursing Professional Framework into practice

Program format

Nurse residents attend educational sessions throughout the year and are also able to shadow colleagues from other departments during their work time, making it a unique opportunity.

Examples of educational sessions:

  • Simulation lab
  • Medical response and emergency situations
  • System review Including but not limited to: Neurology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory, Skin/Wound
  • Green initiatives and environmental stewardship
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Legal aspects of documentation and care
  • Bariatric basics
  • Conflict engagement
