VISION - We are inspired by the patient’s story and known for our passion, dedication, knowledge, engagement and joy in our profession.
PHILOSOPHY - Caring Science influences every element of nursing at Gundersen from the core essentials to measurement and evaluation.
Nursing Professional Framework
Our Nursing Professional Framework - with Caritas as the foundation - supports, guides, strengthens and empowers our more than 1,550 nurses to evolve in their professions as individuals and as a whole.
The framework is:
Focused on caring
The framework enables nurses to stay at the patient’s side, while encouraging them to own how practice is delivered and how it affects patients day-to-day. It ensures that patients remain our top priority.
Nurses are encouraged to create their own path. They can pick and choose professional development opportunities which suit both their strengths and interests.
Nurses can increase or decrease their involvement in education, evidence-based practice and research based on their individual needs at any given point in their career.
Nurses are given opportunities to lead change through shared decision-making, no matter what position they hold.
Nurses are valued where they're at in their careers and where they want to go - or remain. The goal of the framework is not to advance to the top.
Caritas - at the heart
Caritas represents Caring Science Theory and is at the core of Gundersen nursing practice. Caritas comes from Latin meaning "to cherish, appreciate, give special if not loving attention to."
Caring Science Theory was developed by Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, and is easily applied to everyday nursing practice. For example, it means being fully present with patients, practicing loving kindness with yourself and others, and being sensitive to a patient’s cultural beliefs and practices. Caritas reinforces our belief that it is a privilege to care for patients.
