Adjustable Gastric Banding

Adjustable gastric banding uses an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach to help lose weight

Gundersen Health System offers adjustable gastric banding as a bariatric surgical option. With this surgery, an inflatable band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can be consumed and to extend the time a person feels full.

A porthole is inserted under the patient's skin. The band is gradually tightened through the porthole during the first several months after the operation to partition the stomach into two compartments, a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch. The tightened band creates a narrow passage between the two compartments. The smaller pouch restricts the amount of food a patient can eat.

The procedure is minimally invasive, adjustable and reversible. The band can be adjusted in the office to increase or decrease restriction. In this surgical option, no intestine is bypassed therefore digestion and absorption are normal. The adjustable gastric band is a more gradual weight loss compared to gastric bypass.
